We woke up in the Pemex parking lot after a surprisingly excellent night of sleep with no real idea of what we were going to do today. Our friend Chrissy had recommended a good place for lunch in Tulum that serves excellent chile rellenos which are my favorite, so we decided Tulum for a lunchtime destination was as good a plan as any.
We hit Tulum at precisely noon, found the restaurant - Don Cafeto - stowed the animals in the camper in the shade on a side street, and had an absolutely delicious lunch.

He risked embarrassing the waiter because he had to ask if they were real Mexican tacos - i.e., no cheese or sour cream which his lactose intolerant self can’t eat, but which have NO PLACE on a real Mexican taco - but he was assured that they were the real thing, and they were. |
After lunch we found our favorite gelato place in Tulum where Karin Alexander and I once had 5 dips each in gigantic waffle cones. Tom and I only had one dip each since we’d just had a big lunch, but it was perfect. And Tom had FIVE sorbets to choose from! He had mango sorbet, and I had tiramisu gelato, FWIW.
We left Tulum and drove to Coba, where we swam in the Tankhach-Ha Cenote. It’s underground (as cenotes generally are) and always 78.8 degrees, but with the 90+ degree outside temperature, it was very refreshing.
Tom jumped from the 5M platform pictured here, with the picture taken from the 10M platform above it. I didn’t jump.
We’re now legally parked in the parking lot of the restaurant attached to the Coba ruins. We even paid a whole $120P (about $6US) to make it legal. We’re just across the street from the Coba Laguna, and it’s very quiet.
